About the Branch
On the easternmost side of the region, the branch covers a large and diverse area, incorporating the mostly urban metropolitan borough of Tameside, a swathe of north west Derbyshire incorporating parts of the Peak District National Park all the way past Buxton, and the north eastern tip of the county of Cheshire.
The branch has members spread throughout the area - over 550 of them - who enjoy the offerings of the 500 or so pubs in the branch area, particularly the beers produced by the five microbreweries, (most of whom produce award winning brews). Our pubs range from barely changed street corner boozers, through the bars of Ashton and Staly Vegas (some of which actually serve a great pint of the real stuff), to family orientated foodie pubs to stone classic rural gems.
The branch has hosted about 50 beer festivals since being formed, and currently hosts an annual beer tent to refresh the attendees at the Glossop Victorian Weekend, held the weekend after the August Bank Holiday, specializing in new and rare microbrewery beers and probably the only beer festival on the calendar where the customers have been known to arrive in traction engines!
Over the years we have had a positive influence on pubs and breweries in the area, supporting licensees wishing to retain cask ales and a choice of beers in the face of their area manager's opposition and most notably being in the thick of the fighting to keep the Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar open for everyone to enjoy. With a long running beer tent at the Ashton Canals Festival, we also helped to realise the complete restoration of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal for future generations to enjoy. The fact that it is a great conduit for visiting some excellent pubs was purely coincidental!
As well as the work of campaigning and the beer tent, the branch has a very active social side, holding regular informal social gatherings on Saturdays, the ever popular brewery visits, and well established holidays. These are held as a long weekend in the early months of the year somewhere in the UK, and an annual trip overseas in the autumn. Venues in the past have included Brussels, Cologne, Prague, Stuttgart, Liege, Munich, Northern France, Boston USA, Brugge and New York.
We always welcome information regarding what is happing on our patch, so please don't hesitate to drop us a line. If you live in the branch area even better - why not join us and find out what you are missing!
Grasping the nettle of this interweb thingy we are setting up a branch website at the following address: http://www.hpneccamra.org.uk
Feel free to have a browse.
